Both CUI tennis teams will compete for third place on Saturday
Box Score SURPRISE, Ariz. – After both Concordia University Irvine tennis teams scored big emotional wins in the PacWest quarterfinals on Thursday, the Golden Eagles were ready for an encore on Friday.
Both teams faced Azusa Pacific in the semifinals and came in as the underdogs based on their seeds. Despite their efforts, the Cougars proved too difficult to cage and APU advanced with matching 4-0 wins over the Golden Eagles.
Usually it's ladies first, but the gentlemen played in the morning. Thursday's final hero Mario Aleksic and sophomores Adam Kartzinel were leading at No. 3 doubles 5-3, but were stopped when the other two slots finished ahead of them. APU won the doubles point dueling with 6-2 victories.
Spencer Cinco And Lemiel Tairahoy both were halfway to earning a point for Concordia at No. 4 singles and No. 6 singles, respectively. But Azusa Pacific picked up points in three other positions before they could officially capitalize and that was ultimately why the final score looked lopsided than it did at 4-0.

The ladies wanted to pick up where they left off the day before and had a good outing All-Conference doubles partnersEmilie Lugon-Moulin And Bryn Johnson. The freshman duo won 6-2 at No. 2 doubles, but APU earned the doubles point by canceling out their efforts with wins over No. 1 and No. 3.
Lugon-Moulin and Johnson also led their singles matches. They each scored a 6-2 victory in the first set and were involved in tight second sets with a chance to give the Golden Eagles two points in the scoring column. But just like in the men's match, APU scored three quick wins, ending the match early 4-0.
Both Concordia teams will now play the third place matches in Surprise on Saturday. Sticking with the name of the city in Arizona where this tournament takes place, the Academy of Art on the women's side surprised everyone by advancing to the finals after upsetting Point Loma on Friday, so that means the CUI women will be on Saturday will play Point Loma at 1 p.m.
The men start again in the morning with a rematch at 9:00 am against Biola for third place. Both teams split their encounters earlier this season.
