I was a pretty good pace bowler when I was younger. I could bowl both ways too. I broke 2 bones in my hand when I was 19, I haven’t been able to release a ball properly since! That’s partly why I stopped playing cricket when I went to university, I was quite depressed because I couldn’t bowl properly anymore. I’ve never really had a good throwing arm (and after an overarm yesterday that went 35 yards and destroyed my shoulder, everything since has been underarm).
I got back into it in my late 20s and was chatting to a mate in the local pub. Someone there knew he had played for the Warwickshire youth team (he famously broke Nick Knight's toe in the nets) and was torn about playing for the pub team. We had one of those 'I'll do it' conversations and the following week we turned up at the nets where my mate could still bowl about 70mph after 4 paces and hit both ways as it turned out! It turned out I could hit a ball in my spare time too, in a season of 20 over retirement at 25 cricket I ended up with a season average of over 100, having scored over 200 and only been out twice. It seems my temperament has improved in my more recent break from the game too, as has my batting ability!
Senior cricket is a sector that is developing enormously. A few friends play county cricket in a certain age group or would like to do so.
I have just had a look at my local club's website and Facebook page. It looks like they have three teams most Saturdays, plus a friendly team on Sundays, a ladies team that plays on Friday nights and an over 40s team (that's not what you mean by seniors?) that plays a few one-off friendly games during the season. I would like to give it a go as I am well over 40 now.
