Megan Shackleton: Book lover ready for dream Paralympic story
Shackleton's life also changed when, at the age of 12, she attended a Playground to Podium event organised by West Yorkshire Sport, which was designed to give young people the opportunity to try new sports.
She tried table tennis, was seen as someone with talent and – combined with watching London 2012 – her path to the Paralympic Games was paved.
“What I loved about table tennis from the start is that there are so many aspects that make a good player,” she said. “And meeting the ParalympicsGB team for London was really inspiring.
“It's really powerful, I know I used to love [swimmer] Rebecca Adlington. Will Bayley was a huge inspiration to me too, it's important for kids to have good role models.”
After Shackleton's podium run in Japan, she is hoping for similar success in France, in both the singles and mixed doubles, alongside Britain's other wildcard, Tom Matthews. She describes him as her best friend and it is a “dream come true” to play alongside him.
Shackleton also combines her sporting ambitions with her other love: books.
Shackleton follows the same path as Olympic great Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill, studying for a degree at the University of Sheffield. While Ennis-Hill studied psychology, Shackleton pursues a qualification in English literature.
Shackleton was in her second year at Sheffield but interrupted her studies to pursue her Paralympic spot. She will resume her studies in February 2025 and praised the university for its support.
“I missed it. I like having that academic challenge,” she says of her degree.
“Maybe I love literature as much as I love table tennis, I had great teachers at school who gave me a real passion. I am also interested in journalism, I love wanting to tell other people's stories.
“I can't imagine not studying English and not playing sports. Books and sports, those are the things that make me me.”
Shackleton's favorite book is the young adult novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. She says she can identify with the main character Charlie, a teenager suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
I felt like I could identify with Charlie, like I was someone with more background than anyone else.”
The Paris table tennis competitions will take place from August 29 to September 7 at the South Paris Arena 4.
The tournament begins with the men's, women's and mixed doubles events, which have replaced the team events. This is followed by 22 singles events, of which 11 are wheelchair events and 11 are standing events.
