Sea to Sky Bears hockey cancelled for 2024/25
The league cited ice time and coaching recruitment issues as reasons for the cancellation
Local hockey players and their families were given disappointing news last Friday when the Sea to Sky Bears' upcoming campaign was officially canceled.
The Bears are jointly run by the Whistler and Squamish Minor Hockey Associations and strive to provide competitive youth who remain in their home communities with opportunities to play at a high level. However, several logistical challenges have proven insurmountable.
“The intent for the U18 Bears for the 2024-25 season was to field an A1 and A2 team, as having two teams with players from both associations would reduce the already maximized ice situation in the corridor,” a Bears representative said in an email. “The associations set the deadline for hiring coaches for July 31st, knowing that we would need to update each association and those in the program by August 2nd at 12 noon.
“Unfortunately, we have not been successful in our recruitment efforts. We did consider qualified parent coaches as an alternative, knowing that this was not the original intent of the program, but neither option yielded any positive results. Due to the critical need to provide hockey to as many children as possible, the noted ice restrictions and coaching challenges, the difficult decision has been made to cancel the Bears program for the 2024/2025 season. We understand the impact this will have and how it negatively impacts the Bears players, we will be reaching out to Bears families directly to discuss options, including a U18 A team for Squamish.”
The email also urged people to bring their concerns to the District of Squamish Community Planning Department, saying that restrictions on ice time at the town’s only rink could jeopardize other aspects of Squamish Minor Hockey (SMHA) programming.
