Good luck sorting the SEC
We're 11 weeks into the 2024 college football season, and one thing is very clear: the playoff race has been completely derailed.
The races within some of these conferences, especially the SEC, make it nearly impossible to determine which teams will or will not be allowed to participate. For much of the year I felt good about my own projections.
Now I'm not sure how this will go.
Interestingly, only one new team makes it into my Top 12, but there was a lot of shuffling in the rankings.

Dropped out – Georgia (formerly 2)
After Georgia's 28-10 loss in Oxford, good luck figuring out which SEC teams make the playoffs. The conference is a complicated mess with seven teams with two or fewer losses and six with playoff arguments (regardless of what Eli Drinkwitz says about Mizzou).
Texas and Tennessee each have just one loss, so they're in the game. I moved Texas back into the automatic berth because they seemed to be the better of those two despite Tennessee having a better win. But then things get messy.
Georgia, Alabama, Texas A&M and Ole Miss all have cases to file. And of that group, in the end I only have Alabama. The Tide beat Georgia head-to-head, so I can't justify having the Bulldogs but not Alabama if they have the same record.
By that same idea, the Bulldogs lost to Ole Miss. But having Ole Miss in the field is hard to justify when they are coming off a loss to Kentucky, their LSU loss looks worse, and so many teams exist without these flaws nationally. Texas A&M has not played anyone from this group and will not do so this season. But while their losses to Notre Dame and South Carolina have aged well, their best wins, Missouri and LSU, carry less weight.
So Georgia goes from my No. 2 pick last week to completely off the field, and both the Rebels and Aggies remain on the outside looking in for now. I only see a spot for one two-loss team at this point, and Bama is the most justified.
I'm sure SEC fans will look at Penn State, SMU, Notre Dame, and even undefeated Indiana and say that another two-loss SEC team is more deserving of a spot than those teams, and honestly, the selection committee do that too. agree. But I don't, not at this point in the year.
We'll see if this all settles down reasonably well in the final weeks of the season, but I have a feeling it won't.
