AMD launches new chip for AI PCs amid fierce battle with Nvidia and Intel

U.S. chip designer Advanced Micro Devices on Tuesday announced new processors to power artificial intelligence-enabled PCs, as it aims to take the lead in the AI ​​PC race against rivals such as Nvidia and Intel.

An AI PC is a personal computer with a processor designed to perform AI tasks such as real-time language translation and summarization.

AMD called these its most powerful chips ever for business PCs and said its Ryzen Pro 8040 series processors for laptops and Ryzen Pro 8000 series processors for desktops are built with advanced 4-nanometer technology. .

AMD said in a press release on Tuesday that these processors will be available in PC models from brands such as HP and Lenovo starting in the second quarter of 2024.

These new AMD chips will compete with chips from Nvidia and Intel designed specifically for AI PCs.

Like Nvidia, AMD doesn't manufacture its own chips. Instead, the company outsources chip manufacturing to semiconductor foundries, primarily Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, the world's largest contract chip maker.

TSMC currently produces 3-nanometer chips and plans to begin mass production of 2-nanometer chips in 2025. Smaller nanometer sizes typically result in more powerful and efficient chips.

In January, AMD announced its next-generation Ryzen 8000G series desktop processors that can deliver “immense power and overwhelming performance for intensive workloads like gaming and content creation.” The 8000G series is built on a 4 nanometer process.

AMD and Intel are embracing AI PC as a new era for the industry. Last year saw an AI boom with the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022.

US consulting firm Gartner predicts that AI PC shipments will account for 22% of all PC shipments by 2024. The research firm predicts that 54.5 million AI PCs will be shipped by the end of the year.

“On-device GenAI capabilities and rapid adoption of AI processors will eventually become standard requirements for technology vendors,” said Ranjit Atwal, senior director analyst at Gartner.

However, this could present vendors with difficulties in “differentiating themselves from competitors” and increasing revenue, Atwal said.
