Experts weigh in in the area where the 6.0 earthquake hit Thursday – Happy Sacramento Day

Walker (CBS13) – A 6.0-magnitude earthquake was felt by people on Thursday. A professor at the University of California, Davis, explains why there is more to the effect than many understand.

Some in Mono County were still cleaning up on Friday. The province is located on top of the Antelope Valley fault line. When this fault line ruptured it took many by surprise. In fact, a flea market was so badly damaged that the works of artists from all over the world fell to the ground and crashed.

“It felt like she was going to raise the building again and block it again,” said Victoria Victor.

The market is at the epicenter of Thursday’s earthquake, with people feeling multiple aftershocks.

“So, as mountains grow, it is not unusual for earthquakes like this to occur,” said Professor John Randle of the University of California, Davis’ Department of Earth and Space Sciences.

Professor Randall says that although it is more than 150 miles from Sacramento, the 6.0-magnitude earthquake is understood to have been felt as far west as the Bay Area and across the San Joaquin Valley.

“It’s not terribly surprising because as I mentioned, we basically live on a big pile of sedimentary rock. The waves go into the sedimentary basin and bounce around and build up in intensity and that’s why we feel them,” Randall said.

This has triggered rock slides in an area with an entire network of faults on the eastern side of the Sierra where earthquakes are already common. In fact, says Dr. Lucy Jones, a widely trusted public authority on earthquakes, it’s a place seismologists often study.

“Historically, we’ve had a lot of earthquakes in the Eastern California Cher region and in the past two years we’ve had a lot,” said Dr. Jones.

It’s common but devastating as Victoria is left to pick up the pieces at Walker.

“I didn’t expect something like this up here,” Victoria said.

Hope they get a break. Dr. Jones says there is only a 5% to 10% chance that this is a bad omen of something bigger.
