A strong earthquake has hit the Tokyo area, but officials say there is no immediate danger of a tsunami.

The earthquake registered 6.1 on the Richter scale, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

In 2011, a powerful earthquake and tsunami in Japan caused the melting of three nuclear reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, in the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986.
