Magnitude 6.2 earthquake strikes off northern California coast: USGS

(KTLA) – A 6.2-magnitude earthquake was recorded off the coast of Northern California Monday afternoon, according to the US Geological Survey.

The US Geological Survey said the quake, which struck around 12:10 p.m., had its epicenter in the Pacific Ocean, about 24 miles west of Petrolia and 44 miles southwest of Eureka.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The USGS website showed that shaking was being felt throughout the northern part of the state and as far south as the Bay Area.

“Moderate to strong shaking was recorded by the seismic network along the coast. This geologist felt the earthquake in San Francisco!” the California Geological Survey tweeted.

San Francisco is about 250 miles from Petrolia.

The quake was sited off Cape Mendocino in the Mendocino fault zone, which defines the southern boundary between the Juan de Fuca plates and the Pacific Ocean, according to seismologist Lucy Jones.

No tsunami warning was issued.

As Jones explained: “It is a diversion error, meaning the movement is sideways. There is no vertical movement so very little water is displaced so there is no tsunami warning.”

The earthquake’s initial magnitude was measured at 5.8 before the Geological Survey upgraded it shortly after.
