Experts believe that supporting remote communities cut off by an earthquake due to the Alpine Fault will be a major challenge.

The longest natural straight line on Earth, the Alpine Fault extends more than 800 km between the Australian plate and the Pacific Ocean.

As a result of research over the past two decades, we now know that there is a 75 percent chance that an earthquake will occur on the Alpine Fault in the next 50 years, and an 82 percent chance that it will be more than eight on the Richter scale.

Over the past 8000 years, there has been a major earthquake on the Alpine fault roughly every 300 years. The last was in 1717.

They have a large area they aspire to look after which stretches from Milford Sound in the south, Hari Hari in the north and inland to the main divisions, said Kara Edwards, of Te Rūnanga o Makaawhio.

“The impacts from an alpine rift are likely to be large and massive.

“We know this because that’s how our terrain has been shaped. From the air, it’s dramatic… an alpine fault timeline is moving, basically,” she said.

Westland District CEO Simon Bastion acknowledges that Hokitika is in the middle of a place that will make a huge impact.

“The problem with the West Coast and Westland is its isolation. We rely heavily on our infrastructure, particularly our route in and out of the West Coast.”

He says there are only three ways and three ways out and all of them will be in danger.

“The biggest concern for our residents is the length of the isolation period. Three weeks to six weeks we’re dealing with it well but then we will find limitations around ensuring supplies get to those sensitive areas.”

The Civil Defense has installed a huge container near Hokitika Airport, which will serve as the headquarters and is slowly stacking emergency food and equipment.

Most of Hokitika is not far from sea level but Seaview Lodge, a historic building that was a former mental hospital, sits on a balcony above the city and ocean and will be used for evacuations.

The repercussions for people who need urgent medical care are also horrific.

There is one major hospital on the West Coast, the newly constructed Te Nīkau Gray Hospital and Health Center in Greymouth.

Dr. Carolyn Orkeston is the scientific lead for Campaign AF8 – a collaboration between the Civil Defense Emergency Department and Alpine Fault scientists to bring scientific evidence to communities that need to hear it.

She said New Zealand has a recent history of dealing with disasters and what they have noticed is that people come together and help each other.

“I’m sure New Zealand will manage this event really well, it’s going to be tough times but we can become more flexible and prepare for this event if we start working now.”

Edwards said marae and Iwi can play an incredible role in terms of planning and especially in response.

“Because the core value that drives our culture is Manakitanga and caring for people.

“If you think about the Kaikoura earthquake, Ngai Tahoe has moved toward understanding what the effects are, not just on our people but the impact on the entire community.”

Bastion said the West Coast lived with this in his own backyard for some time.

“They know it exists and they are willing to live with that danger,” he said.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
