The Seattle earthquake will cause tsunami waves to reach the beaches in less than 3 minutes

New research shows that an earthquake in Seattle would cause tsunamis to reach shores in less than three minutes.

To help emergency services prepare a response plan, geologists from the Department of Natural Resources conducted the earthquake’s impact on the Seattle Fault.

Using a 7.5-magnitude low-probability earthquake scenario, a tsunami emergency response plan was created by experts from the Washington Geological Survey.

In their simulation, tsunami waves would reach parts of the coast in less than three minutes.

According to the research, areas along the eastern side of Bainbridge Island, Alki Point, and Elliott Bay can be engulfed by water.

Their analysis found that waves can travel up to 3 miles within parts of the port.

The data indicated coastal flooding and increased currents throughout the Salish Sea, from Blaine to Olympia, but flooding from the tsunami would be worse near the fault line.

Several previously minor earthquakes shook areas across the region due to the Seattle Fault, which crosses east-west through Puget Sound into downtown.

Public Lands Commissioner Hilary Franz said there is a “long history of earthquakes” in the Puget Sound faults.

The last known earthquake at the Seattle Fault occurred about 1,100 years ago, however, geological evidence shows five additional earthquakes estimated at magnitude 6.5 have occurred within the Seattle Fault Zone in the past 3,500 years.

Ms Franz said: “Most often, when we think of a tsunami, we think of our offshore coast and our communities along the Pacific Ocean.

“While the history of earthquakes and tsunamis along the Seattle Fault is less frequent than the Cascadia Subduction Zone, the effects can be enormous.

“That’s why it’s so important that these communities have the information they need to prepare and respond.”
