SCEMD launches Earthquake.SC | South Carolina Public Radio

South Carolina residents now have a new tool to help them better prepare for earthquakes. Today, the South Carolina Department of Emergency Management launched Earthquake.SC, an interactive website designed to guide people through the basics of earthquakes in Palmetto State and how to best prepare for them.

Earthquake.SC is designed to be a fast, flexible and flexible online reference, accessible on a desktop computer, smartphone or tablet.

The new site features several interactive sections including Home Hazard Hunt, an interactive map showing current and historical earthquakes, a walkthrough for the Earthquake Safety Steps “Drop, Cover, Hold On” and much more. For example, the Myths and Facts section addresses many urban legends and frequently asked questions regarding earthquake activity in the state.

We’ve seen more than our fair share of low-magnitude earthquakes this year. None were large enough to cause any damage, but we encourage everyone to prepare for a major earthquake; Although the possibility is unlikely, said Kim Stenson, director of SCEMD. “Earthquake.SC is another tool in the toolbox for people to use as they become emergency managers and be as prepared as possible for earthquakes in South Carolina.”

Earthquake.SC is a virtual companion to the main SCEMD website, scemd.org, the SCEMD Manager mobile app (which contains earthquake notifications that users can activate) and the printed South Carolina earthquake guide.

Our state typically experiences about 10 to 20 earthquakes annually; However, this year’s swarm of more than 80 low-magnitude earthquakes in Kershaw County highlights earthquakes that can occur anywhere in South Carolina.

The epicenter of the largest earthquake ever recorded was along the eastern coast of the United States outside Charleston on August 31, 1886. The 7.3-magnitude earthquake devastated the area and was felt by people from Chicago to Cuba. According to a study commissioned by SCEMD, an earthquake of similar magnitude today would result in massive loss of life, severe property damage, and huge economic loss.
