Small earthquake rocks central South Korea

A 4.1-magnitude earthquake hit a small farming county in South Korea’s central region on Saturday, but officials said there were no immediate reports of damage.

South Korea’s meteorological agency said the small quake in the town of Goisan was still the most powerful of the 61 earthquakes in the country this year and could have been strong enough to knock objects or smash windows.

Emergency officials received more than 140 calls from residents who said they felt the ground was shaking. Most of the calls were from central North Chungcheong Province, but also from Gyeonggi Province, which surrounds the capital, Seoul, and North and South Gyeongsang Province, according to the Meteorological Agency and government officials.

Central government and regional officials in North Chungcheong said they were unaware of any damage.

Kim Dong-wook, a resident of the central city of Cheongju, told YTN news channel that he heard gurgling on the ground and that the windows “shaked as if during a typhoon.” He said he saw plates and bowls scattered on the floor of a restaurant in his building, but he didn’t know anyone had been hurt.

South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol’s office said it had instructed officials to review the safety of electricity and communications systems, although there were no immediate reports of problems.

South Korea’s Nuclear Safety and Security Commission said the quake did not pose a threat to the safety of nuclear power reactors in the southeastern regions of the country. It also said the quake did not affect a research reactor in downtown Daejeon, about 70 kilometers (43 miles) from where the quake occurred.
