Magnitude 4 earthquake hits southern NSW Tablelands, epicenter near Borougha

A magnitude 4 earthquake shook parts of the NSW Southern Tablelands, with a couple near the epicenter saying it was “like a plane falling out of the sky.”

The shallow earthquake hit northeastern Borough at 9:45 am today at a depth of 3 km.

Geoscience Australia seismologist Hugh Glanville said it was a larger earthquake than the area usually feels.

“People felt this earthquake more than 100 kilometers away with strong tremors that traveled further,” he said.

The home of Melissa Graham and Brad Delforce in Frogmore, near the epicenter, shook when the earthquake struck.

“We heard what sounded like 20 gas bottles exploded at once and then the floor and the house started shaking,” Ms Graham said.

“It took about 10 to 15 seconds, and we literally thought a plane had fallen from the sky right next to the house.

“It sounded like a strong thunder whistle during a thunderstorm with thunder rolling after… It was just like that but underground.”

Ms. Graham said they did not notice any damage.

She said that while they had felt earthquakes before, it was nowhere near what they feel today.

“We’ve had small earthquakes over the years, but today it left my heart beating fast,” she said.

Mr Glanville said more than 50 people in surrounding areas, including Canberra, had reported to Geoscience Australia that they felt the quake.

“While people close to the epicenter may experience minor cracks in the plaster, we don’t expect a lot of minor damage,” he said.

“It is not uncommon for earthquakes to occur in this part of New South Wales, where more than 200 earthquakes have been recorded in the past 10 years.”
