A 5.7 magnitude earthquake was felt off the coast of Fano in several countries

An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck near the coast of the Italian beach resort of Fano, on Wednesday, shaking several cities including Rome.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said the quake occurred at a depth of seven kilometers, about 28 kilometers northeast of the city.

It was followed by two tremors of 3.1 and 3.4 degrees at about seven in the morning local time.

Initial reports stated that the quake did not result in major damage or injuries. However, cracks were reportedly seen in the buildings.

“There are no casualties at the moment,” an Italian Civil Protection spokesman told Reuters, as the agency tweeted that inspections on the ground were continuing.

The main earthquake in northern Italy was reported to be felt by residents in Bologna, Romania and Rome, as well as other countries including Croatia and San Marino.

EMSC tweeted: “The tremors were felt at a distance of 300 km by nearly 16 million people in Croatia, Italy, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Vatican.”

EMSC warned of further rebound aftershocks in the following hours and days.

“Unless necessary, stay away from affected areas for your own safety. Use caution and follow the information of national authorities.”

As a precaution, schools in Pesaro and other nearby cities were closed, and rail traffic running through Pesaro along the Adriatic coast was suspended.

Prime Minister Georgia Meloni’s office said it was “in constant contact” with civil protection authorities and the head of the Marche region to follow developments.
