“It sounded like thunder coming from inside the house.” West Texas reaction to the 5.4 earthquake

MIDLAND, Texas (COSA) — In the minutes following the 5.4-magnitude earthquake that struck just north of Midland, viewers of CBS 7 sent messages, videos, and photos of the motion and damage.

While earthquakes have been occurring in West Texas for several years, residents say Friday’s quake was different.

“It was like nothing I’d experienced before,” said Midland resident Kelly Morgan.

Morgan was on the second floor of her North Midland home when the earthquake struck.

“The whole house only [shook back and forth]It almost sounded like thunder was coming from inside the house.”

The story tells of videos submitted to CBS7 by concerned citizens. Puddles are dripping, Christmas trees are shaking, and many homes have cracks running through the walls and around doors.

“I’m not going to lie, I was kind of scared at first because it dragged on,” Morgan said. “This was longer and definitely more powerful than anything I’ve ever felt.”

It was strong enough to be felt by Gary Ford 150 miles away near Abilene.

“Suddenly, while I was working on my computer, I heard a noise as if something was going through the wall in the room next to me,” Ford said.

Ford said his home was not damaged.

Morgan also said her home was unharmed, although she lost some Christmas decorations.

“We lost a couple of trinkets, but nothing big,” she said.

The good news is that as of Friday night, there were no reports of major damage or injuries from the quake. Midland Memorial Hospital and Medical Center Hospital said they had no damage and that hospitals were operating normally.
