San Jose Earthquake player finds political voice amid protests

When Colin Cabernick sparked a national conversation in 2016 by sitting first and then kneeling while playing the national anthem, another athletic anger in the Gulf region.

Chia Salinas, a veteran midfielder in San Jose Earthquakes, recalls that he is angry at Cybernick, the 49 midfielder who has not signed since the season he protested against police brutality towards blacks.

“I thought it was ridiculous, I thought she was disrespectful,” Salinas said this week in a one-hour interview in which he volunteered that his views on Cybernick’s gesture had changed.

“I think he was strong and accomplished something amazing,” Salinas added. “Unfortunately, I am aware of this later on than I would have liked.”

Salinas, 34, said that the killing of George Floyd and other African Americans at the hands of the police led to a wake-up in America.

Salinas’ changing attitude underscores how these troubled times have turned athletes into activists wanting to use their platforms to give an agency to pressing national issues.

“We have blind spots and we must be ready to see them, we must see them,” said Salinas, who has not said anything controversial in his 12-year career. “We should not believe that our views are always correct.”

Salinas, midfielder and defender, supports the idea of kneeling while playing Star-Spangled Banner before the matches this year, as the Major Soccer League returned to action Wednesday with a 25-team tournament at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. Earthquakes are due to open a smaller spectator tournament on Friday against the Seattle Sounders FC in Group Two. San Jose group matches will be counted in the regular season ranking when MLS season resumes – and if – – MLS season sometime in August.

Salinas had more time to focus on social injustice this year while sheltering with his wife and three children due to the pandemic of the new Coronavirus. MLS stopped playing on March 12 due to a widespread COVID-19 outbreak, and earthquakes were the last team to be evacuated to return to training under Santa Clara County orders.

Time out of the field allowed Salinas to read about aspects of American history in which he said he was not very familiar. Salinas, who received a degree in Kinesiology from Foreman University, said he gained an understanding of how the rich country was growing on some people’s backs.

“It broke my heart that it took several terrible cases for me to see that,” Salinas said. “I realize I have a lot of blind spots and ignorance that I didn’t know I have. Now, how do I use my platform, how do I use my vote and how do I use my voice to help others?”

Salinas grew up in Texas, where his grandfather became a farmer after leaving Mexico. Chia’s father was born in Mexico.

He said that his family had overcome the racial inequality experienced by many Mexican immigrants to create a comfortable American life for him and his brother Kobe.

The Salinases lived in San Angelo, Texas, but he moved to the Grapevine suburb of Dallas when Shea was in seventh grade, so he could get better soccer training.

After a strong football career in Foreman, Salinas was generally ranked 15th by earthquake expansion in 2008. After moving to Philadelphia and Vancouver, Salinas has been with earthquakes since 2012.

Last year, Salinas had the best six career goals and three assists despite only starting 12 times.

Earthquakes players spend more time together while booking a Disney World tournament. Salinas said that he led to enthusiastic talks around the world outside the soccer bubble.

The team supported Jacob Akanereieg when the teenager Pleasanton posted a statement last month against racism on the seismological site.

Salinas said that Captain Chris Wendolovsky, a member of Kiowa Nation in Oklahoma, had led discussions about what the team could do to tackle the country’s problems.

San Jose, like almost every MLS team, has a varied dressing room. In earthquakes there are 13 foreign players who may not understand America’s complex racial history closely. Another player, Saeed Haji, was born in a Somali refugee camp in Kenya but grew up in New Hampshire.

Danny Hussien, a seism striker of a Moroccan father and a Dutch mother, said on Wednesday that he recently showed his colleagues a racist message he received on his Instagram account. Hosen, who is bi-ethnic, said his white team mates apologized to him, saying they don’t know what blacks and colored people go through.

Although hard times have not changed Hoesen’s opinion of America.

He said: “This is a large country with great diversity and such a great history.” “I knew a few things about it. It’s not that racism exists only in America. It is in Europe, it is in Asia, it is everywhere.

“I am curious how the state deals with it, and how the president deals with it.”

Salinas appreciates the diversity in the dressing room because “in the end you will meet someone who does not agree with you so that you cannot escape.”

He said that his Facebook feed became polarized because he grew up in conservative Texas and studied college in South Carolina but lived most of his adult life in the Gulf region, noting that his parents’ opinions are quite different from his views.

Salinas said he recently learned more about how to create property tax financing for a tilted school system against colored students and those living in poverty.

“This is not to discredit work and effort, but there is an existing system that is not necessarily a fair playing field,” he said. “Children are innocent in all of this, and they must have equal opportunities to succeed.”

Salinas said he became a Christian while attending Grapevine High School. According to his social media posts, Salinas and his wife Julie Salinas are active in the Silicon Valley Church that focuses on the Gospel.

“I think I justify myself sometimes,” Salinas said. “I need to be a better listener and not always try to fix things.”

Salinas did not discuss his political inclinations. When asked about support for the so-called hard-line religious right of President Donald Trump, the player generally answered.

Salinas said: “The use of the Bible to harm or divide and separate people is wrong.” “It is easy to cut and paste things and tell a special story with a very big book. But the Bible is the story of God trying to unite his people from every generation, from every nation, from every color, from every group of people. This involves justice, a lot of grace, and a lot of mercy “.

Salinas also said he now understands that kneeling during the national anthem does not respect the U.S. Army – a criticism that Trump and some National Football League fans directed to Caipernic.

Salinas said that he always wanted to be a soldier because “it is the Bible to sacrifice your life for the sake of others.”

For him, the national anthem is the moment to shut up with God.

“I can do this on my knees and convey awareness to injustice,” Salinas said.
