San Jose Earthquake player finds political voice amid protests

When Colin Cabernick sparked a national conversation in 2016 by sitting first and then kneeling while playing the national anthem, another athletic anger in the Gulf region.

Chia Salinas, a veteran midfielder in San Jose Earthquakes, recalls that he is angry at Cybernick, the 49 midfielder who has not signed since the season he protested against police brutality towards blacks.

Salinas said he became a Christian while attending Grapevine High School. According to his social media posts, Salinas and his wife Julie Salinas are active in the Silicon Valley Church that focuses on the Gospel.

“I think I justify myself sometimes,” Salinas said. “I need to be a better listener and not always try to fix things.”

Salinas did not discuss his political inclinations. When asked about support for the so-called hard-line religious right of President Donald Trump, the player generally answered.
