A 5.7 magnitude earthquake shakes Hawaii; No tsunami threat is expected

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake shook a remote area on Hawaii's Big Island on Friday.

The National Weather Service's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a tsunami was not expected. Previous estimates indicated that the magnitude of the earthquake reached 6.3. Reports said the quake was felt as far away as Honolulu, more than 200 miles away.

The quake, which struck at 10:06 a.m. Hawaii time, caused “very strong” tremors in the town of Pahala, population 1,900, on the south side of the island, as determined by the Modified Mercalli intensity scale. Very strong vibration can cause significant damage in poorly constructed structures.

The quake and several aftershocks that have occurred since then were evident throughout Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, park spokeswoman Jessica Firacani said. The Kilauea Visitor Center in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, located about 23 miles from the epicenter, received mild shaking, defined as enough to shake dishes and windows. It can feel like a vehicle crashing into a building.

“It was definitely a good violent shake,” she said. “The visitor communication station shook badly, but so far there have been no reports of damage.”

She said teams are still assessing the massive park — more than 300,000 acres — but no issues have been reported so far.

The epicenter of the earthquake occurred on the southeast side of Mauna Loa, the largest active volcano on the planet.

“We have a lot of old wooden farmhouses, so it was shaking very loudly,” Julia Neal, the owner of the old wooden farmhouses, told the Associated Press.

Light shaking was also felt in Hilo, the island's largest city, and in Kailua-Kona, home to several of the island's resorts on its west coast. Both cities are located about 45 miles from the epicenter.

The epicenter of the quake was about 135 miles southeast of Kahului, Maui's largest city, and about 215 miles from Honolulu.
