A 2.6 magnitude aftershock was felt – NBC New York

Less than a week after a 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Tri-State, a 2.6-magnitude aftershock was felt Wednesday in New Jersey.

The aftershock occurred about 10:22 a.m. and was located about 5.1 miles southwest of Gladstone in Somerset County, according to the USGS.

The US Geological Survey said a “weak” tremor was measured across northern New Jersey and into Long Island and Connecticut.

The depth of the latest tremor was about three miles.

The aftershock that occurred on Wednesday is the latest in a series of tremors that have occurred since last Friday's earthquake. The US Geological Survey said that more than 40 aftershocks have occurred since Friday, most of which were magnitude 2 or less.

So, how long can the region expect to feel additional aftershocks? Experts say the opportunity will remain for at least some time. Experts say that in many cases, aftershocks can occur for at least a week after the initial earthquake. The USGS said there was a 21% chance of an aftershock of magnitude 3.0 or higher in the first month after this particular quake, and a 3% chance of an aftershock of magnitude 4.0 or higher.

According to the USGS, “Aftershocks are smaller earthquakes that occur in the same general area within days to years after a larger event or ‘mainshock.’”

An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale shook the northeast of the country on Friday morning. Dr. Stephen Holer, associate professor of physics at Fordham University, explains how this is highly unusual in the region.
