How Utah students practiced earthquake safety during statewide emergency drills

SALT LAKE CITY — School started as usual Thursday morning at Canyon View Elementary School in Cottonwood Heights. But within a few minutes, it was clear that today was going to be a little different.

Instead of sitting on their desks, the students climbed under them.

“I've grown a lot lately, so under the desk was small,” said Henry Dunn, a second-grader.

It was part of the Great Utah ShakeOut, a statewide event during which people in schools, offices and homes train for an earthquake.

“I think it's very important for students to be aware of what they can do to protect themselves,” said Heidi Wilcox, a second-grade teacher at Canyon View.

After an announcement came over the PA system alerting the students to begin earthquake training, Wilcox gave simple instructions — drop, cover, and wait.

The students rushed to their desks and climbed downstairs, remaining in place as simulated earthquake sounds played over the loudspeaker.

“I think it can be a little scary to do, especially for such a long time,” Wilcox said.

But she climbed under the table, too, to encourage her students as training continued. After the “earthquake” ended, the students were instructed to remain in place for another 60 seconds – an important safety measure.

“You need to hold still for another 60 seconds, just to make sure the shaking doesn't start again,” said Kirsten Draper, the school's principal.

The entire school was then evacuated outside, awaiting permission to return to class.

“This is an exercise that we really need to be prepared for, because it could actually happen,” Draper said.

Four years ago, Canyon View students weren't in class when a 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Salt Lake Valley, shaking people from their beds and causing some damage.

But Draper said holding ShakeOut drills now is important — in case a larger earthquake occurs in the future.

“We've had a lot of earthquakes around the world, and we've seen that they can cause a lot of damage,” she said.

Finally, it was certainly an unusual start to the school day.

“It's been a long earthquake drill,” said 8-year-old Rowan McMahon, also a second grader.

But the Canyon View students said the training helped them know what to do if the ground starts shaking.

“I'll go under my desk,” Rowan said.
