NEW YORK — Did the New York area experience an earthquake? People across New Jersey and New York reported earthquakes Tuesday morning, and in a surprising turn of events, NASA announced that a meteor may have disintegrated over Midtown Manhattan at around the same time.

But this does not confirm that the meteor caused the shaking and loud noise, which some have also reported. NASA also pointed to reports of fireball sightings.

What we know about the supposed meteorite

Based on data from the American Meteor Society, Bill Cooke, head of NASA's Meteorite Environments Office, estimated that the fireball was first seen between 10 a.m. and noon near the New Jersey-New York border.

“We estimate the fireball was first seen 49 miles above the Upper Bay (east of Greenville Square),” Cook told Fox 5 New York. “The meteor was traveling slightly east-north at 34,000 miles per hour and descended at a steep angle of 18 degrees to the vertical, passing over the Statue of Liberty before disintegrating 29 miles above midtown Manhattan.”

This information is still preliminary, so reports of the actual path could change. NASA said no meteors were produced in the event, meaning no rocks from outer space fell over New York City on Tuesday.

“There are reports of military personnel in the area at the time of the fireball, which may explain the vibrations and sounds reported to the media,” Cook said.

'No evidence of earthquake': USGS

In a statement to Fox 5 New York, the US Geological Survey said it had received reports of shaking in northern New Jersey and Staten Island, and was examining seismic data in the area.

“The USGS has no direct evidence of the source of the quake,” the statement said. “Previous reports of vibrations without an associated seismic signal were atmospheric, such as sonic booms or weather-related phenomena.”

Eyewitness accounts

Several social media users reported feeling tremors in parts of New Jersey and New York City around 11 a.m. Tuesday.

“Did New Jersey just have another earthquake? My house was just shaking,” one user wrote on X.

Some users reported hearing a loud “boom” sound accompanied by shaking. Other users on X said they felt tremors in their homes and offices. NorthJersey.com reported similar reports on Facebook and Reddit.

Another user wrote: “Oh, did people feel the earthquake in New York? I felt a tremor in southern Queens, can anyone confirm that? The epicenter may be outside of New Jersey.”
