Scurry County is experiencing an increase in earthquake activity, likely caused by sewage disposal.

SNYDER, Texas – Earthquake activity continues to increase in Scurry County.

We spoke with Justin Rubenstein, a geophysicist with the US Geological Survey.

“In this particular area, near Snyder or Hermle or Scurry County, there's seismic activity going back to the 1970s, and we believe that all of this recent seismic activity is due to natural factors,” Rubenstein said.

Rubenstein said the earthquake activity was likely caused by sewage disposal. Recent earthquakes have caused some damage in Scurry County.

“In this earthquake, we had a six-inch water main break,” said Jay Calloway, Snyder’s emergency management coordinator. “City crews fixed it, got people back on water, were checking the sewer plant, and while they were checking it, they found a big crack in one of the holding tanks, the concrete holding tanks.”

Rubenstein says that disposing of sewage can be like an air hockey table.

“When the air hockey table is off the ground, the puck doesn’t move very well,” says Rubinstein. “The fluid pressure or air pressure is low. By squirting water through the slats, you raise that pressure, so the analogy here is to think, ‘OK, we put our money in the air hockey table, the air starts working, and the puck moves more easily,’ and that’s exactly what’s happening here. We’ve injected fluid into the slats, making it easier to slide.”

While many residents said they are concerned about the increase in earthquakes, Rubenstein said that when earthquakes do occur, it is common to see many of them in a short period of time.

“With induced earthquakes, we often see them behave in what we call swarm-like behavior, where you end up with a bunch of earthquakes happening at the same time,” Rubinstein said. “So I wouldn’t say this is a unique behavior, we often see these clusters.”

Snyder Emergency Management Coordinator Jay Calloway said a disaster has been declared and damage is being reported.

“They’re saying we have cracks in our walls, the concrete blocks are cracking, there are cracks above the doors, the mortar joints are cracking, there are some residents who have some cracked foundations,” Callaway said. “Even if it’s minor damage, go ahead and report it to us so we can document it.”
