Earthquake activity remains high at Kilauea.

(BIVN) – Kilauea Volcano has not erupted and the U.S. Geological Survey's alert level for the Hawaiian Island volcano is advisory.

Seismic activity remains high on the Upper East Kilauea Fault Zone and has increased over the past day. The number of earthquakes is expected to be the highest daily total over the past week.

Scientists report that activity in the Middle East Rift Zone (MERZ) remains low, and there are no significant changes along the Lower East Rift Zone and Southwest Rift Zone.

Summit Notes: Approximately 36 earthquakes were recorded beneath Kalauapili (Kilauea summit caldera) over the past 24 hours at depths ranging from 1 to 3 km (0.6–1.9 mi) below the surface, most with magnitudes less than 2.0 m. Deformation rates at the summit have remained relatively low, with a contractionary trend at the summit tiltmeters for most of the past day. A general gradual inflationary trend is still visible on GPS instruments around the summit area. The most recent measured sulfur dioxide emission rate from the summit was approximately 75 tons per day on August 20, 2024.

Fault Zone Notes: Over the past 24 hours, there have been approximately 87 earthquakes under Kilauea's UERZ, extending from Pūhimāu Crater southeast to Maunaolo, an increase from the previous day. Most of the earthquakes were smaller than M2.0. Events occurred at depths ranging from 1 to 3 km (0.6 to 1.8 mi) below the surface. Currently, deformation has remained stable over the past 24 hours.

Activity in the Middle East Rift Zone remains low. There have been no significant changes in the POC tilt meter over the past day. GPS instruments have recorded overall inflation in the region over the past month.

Measurements from continuous gas monitoring stations located downwind of Puʻuʻōʻō in the Middle East Rift Zone—the site of volcanic activity from 1983 to 2018—remain below the detection limits for sulfur dioxide, indicating that sulfur dioxide emissions from this region are negligible.

At present, there is no evidence of increased seismic activity or ground deformation beneath the Lower East Fault Zone, and activity in the Southwest Fault Zone remains low. Current activity is limited to the summit and upper East Fault Zone.

Analysis: The unrest that has been occurring in the UERZ since 8/20/24 may represent another pulse of magma being fed into the UERZ, following the event near Pauahe Crater from July 22-25, 2024. Currently, the MERZ has not shown any signs of increasing unrest; however, magma has recently re-established a path into the MERZ at Kilauea. Unrest could extend into the MERZ as magma supply continues.

There are currently no closures within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park due to high earthquake activity.
