Help has reached the survivors of the Masbate-DSWD earthquake

Legazby City – Families whose homes were damaged by the magnitude 6.6 earthquake that struck Masbate County on Tuesday have received financial assistance and resources from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

At least 21 families who lost their homes already received 5,000 pesos in initial cash assistance, said Marigiselle Mesa, a spokeswoman for DSWD Bicol.

She added that ten family tents and 100 rolls of armored bags were distributed to the survivors.

Mesa said that 252 families are in at least five Masbate towns – Katangan and Bio F.

Mesa said that while more than £ 9 million had been used to purchase food packages, another £ 1 million had been set up in reserve funds for further assistance.

Gremel Alexis Naz, a regional spokesperson for the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), said emergency shelter repair kits and personal protective equipment for healthcare workers are expected to arrive at Masbate by Thursday night or early Friday.

Waiting for tents

The mayor of Katangan, Philip Kabatana, the epicenter of the earthquake, said he was still waiting for more tents as temporary shelters for displaced families who are now occupying school buildings in the city.

He said that at least 150 tents were needed because most of the survivors preferred to sleep outside their damaged homes rather than stay in evacuation centers.

Kabatana said earlier that the evacuees should be placed in separate tents to avoid congestion at evacuation centers, which could lead to a spike in cases of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The city has only six confirmed cases so far, all of which are active.

Cabatania said many families in the coastal village of Matayum had expressed concern that they were not able to rebuild their homes after the sea level rose by about a meter after the earthquake and did not subside.

The gloomy weather added to the anxiety of residents, worried about aftershocks, which continued to be felt in the town two days after the earthquake. The most recent aftershock was recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology at 8:33 am Thursday morning, with a magnitude of 2.5 degrees, and felt at Intensity 1 in Katangan.

The Ministry of Interior and Local Government said Thursday that the municipal government could realign its budget to respond to the needs of its constituents if it depleted the Bayanihan grant and the disaster fund.

Home Secretary Jonathan Malaya said in a radio interview that the county government can “provide assistance immediately” through the Rapid Response Fund.

The Philippine Navy has put disaster risk reduction teams on standby to assist with relief efforts for earthquake survivors.

In addition to deploying medical teams in the quake-affected areas, the Armed Forces of the Philippine Southern Command of Luzon sent a plane to Masbate Airport to assess the damage and the rapid needs of the earthquake. – Reported by Susin Cajigas, Genette Andrade, and Nestor Corrales
