SAN FRANCISCO (CBSSF) – The San Jose Earthquakes and San Francisco Giants have joined the growing boycott of professional athletes due to police shooting of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin.

The earthquakes were scheduled to play on Wednesday evening at Avaya Stadium against Portland Timbers, the first professional sports game of any kind in Santa Clara County since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers were scheduled to play a Wednesday night match at Oracle Park. Earlier on Wednesday, the Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds agreed not to play their match at Miller Park in Milwaukee, and Seattle Mariners voted not to play in their game tonight against the San Diego Padres.

Players expressed solidarity with the National Basketball Association players who boycotted their matches in the supplement to protest that a policeman shot Blake multiple times in the back from close range in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Sunday.
