It takes a while to make the April Fool’s Day joke
For years this day has been one of fun.
In 1996, it was written that after Rick Pitino led Kentucky to the state championship, he was expected to step into the Boston Celtics as head coach and general manager.
The column was written the day before the national championship in Meadowlands, New Jersey.
The column said that the then director of the Kentucky Athletic Club, C.M. Newton had already contacted University of Arkansas head coach Nolan Richardson and was ready to offer him an offer he could not refuse.
The next day, the Wildcats beat Syracuse 76-67.
Everyone went home, though Georgia’s athletic director, Claude Felton, and yours truly got stuck on a bus with a driver who couldn’t find a way to our terminal at Newark Airport.
We rounded it up three times before he listened.
Anyway, a few days later a call arrived at my office.
“This is C. M. Newton and I’d love to talk to you about your Sunday column,” he said briskly. It was obvious in a disturbed tone.
“Kentucky athletic director?” he wondered.
“Yes,” he said.
“I’m not sure I trust you. Give me your number and I’ll call you.”
Newton was surprised, but seconds later he gave me a number that rang straight to his assistant.
“Hi,” he said, “is this Wally Hall?”
It was.
“Someone [he mentioned the name who was not a fan of mine] he sent me a copy of your Sunday column and I’m angry about it, “he said.
I interrupted, something I rarely do.
“What were the last two words?” I asked.
“What?” he growled.
“Can you please read the last two words?” he wondered.
He is.
“You didn’t get the whole column,” he was told.
“What,” he almost shouted, “are you talking?”
The last two words, he was told, said “April Fool.”
There was a long pause, and then he laughed and said, “You obviously don’t like this guy,” and hung up.
A year later, Pitino went to the Celts. It was never known if Newton had contacted Richardson.

Yesterday, as he browsed through several websites mocking the NFL draft, it could not be noticed that five of the top 10 were selected graduates in schools in the Southeastern Conference.
No. 1 on the rankings is LSU linebacker Joe Burrow, although Ohio State will apply for the Heisman Trophy winner since he began his career there.
Alabama, Tua Tagovailo’s returning quarterback, is in 3rd place. He would have been No. 1, but he was injured every two years.
Jedrick Wills, also of Alabama, is No. 4 and the first offensive lineman.
Georgia’s Andrew Thomas, led by Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman, is a top contender.
Juvo Carolina, Javon Kinlaw, a defensive midfielder, is projected to be the 10th player.
What keeps repeating is how strong football is in the SEC, and on another level, how difficult it is to compete with teams like Arkansas, Tennessee, Ole Miss and Mississippi State because they have a limited recruitment base.
A team like Razorback can’t get out of the basement without someone taking their place, and it certainly won’t be Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Georgia or Florida.
These schools run the top recruits every year.
Arkansas can finish 26th nationwide in recruiting and be only 10th or 11th in the SEC.
Pittman is very aware of this and, although he has hired very good staff, most of them have strong links to some employment regions.
Recruitment has become a coach’s most important job.
