Christians spread love and help in disasters after the Indonesian earthquake

Christians are responding to take care of those affected by the 6.2-magnitude earthquake that killed more than 81 people in Indonesia earlier this month.

As of Tuesday, the search for survivors of the January 15 disaster continued, says Mission Network News.

An Asian Access leader says more than 1,000 homes were damaged in the earthquake.

Local and international responders worked together to search for any survivors amid the rubble in the most affected areas, according to the International Red Cross report.

Disasters since the first earthquake – landslides, floods and volcanic eruptions – have depleted resources and made recovery efforts more difficult.

The West Sulawesi earthquake remains the most urgent emergency, with more than 10,000 people expected to need evacuation due to damage to their homes.

ASEAN ACCESS leader says fear is present as survivors stay together in emergency housing assembled by the government. There are concerns about more disasters and COVID-19.

Asian Access is one of the organizations that works to send aid to survivors in Indonesia by sending its network of pastors and church leaders.

The organization hopes to send money to those who have lost their homes to buy the things they need and see those needs met around the disaster site.

Indonesia has the highest number of Muslims in the world, with 87 percent of its population claiming to be followers of Islam. Asian Access has partnered with believers there since 2018.

While they were in Indonesia, the organization worked side by side with the faithful to train local leaders and plant churches.

This month’s earthquake is a far cry from the first earthquake in Indonesia. While these disasters are tragic, they give aid organizations like Asian Access a chance to share Christianity’s love and hope.
