Breakthrough Pig Kidney Surgery May Change the Future of Transplant Surgery

Orlando, Florida (WESH) — There is a shortage of human organs for transplantation.
Dr. Robert Montgomery of the Langone Transplant Institute in NYU says that nearly half of patients waiting for a transplant get sick or die before they get the transplant.
So last month, the chief surgeon and his team reached a turning point.
“We were the first to succeed in transplanting a porcine kidney into a human,” said Montgomery.
This procedure involved a brain-dead patient whose parents donated her body to the kidneys of a scientific and genetically modified pig.
It was attached to the outside of the body and worked for almost two and a half days without being rejected.
“The profound thing about these findings was that the porcine kidneys functioned like human kidney transplants,” Montgomery said.
Dr. Kiran Dhanireddy is the Secretary-General of the Tampa General Hospital Transplantation Institute.
“If we had an essentially infinite supply of organs, more patients could benefit,” said Dhanireddy.
“We predict that human transplants will be a year or two of living pigs,” Montgomery said.
David Klassen leads the United Network for Organ Sharing, which is the connection between organ donors and recipients.
But for him, it’s not only professional but also personal.
He states that his father was denied a heart transplant in 1974 and believes he is too old.
His father died, and his younger brother with genetic heart disease, whom he claims to have in his family, also died.
“I had a heart transplant three years ago until almost the day of this surgery,” Montgomery said. “I know what it’s like to wait for an organ that may not be in time. This breakthrough represents a new hope for a different future for my children and those waiting for a life-saving organ. No one should wait and die. “
