Henrico School Winter Sports Athletes and Coaches Launch Weekly COVID-19 Tests This Week
Henrico County, Virginia (WRIC) — Unvaccinated student athletes and coaches at Henrico County Public School are required to undergo a weekly COVID-19 test.
The district said this would help keep winter sports athletes and their coaches safe during close contact activities.
“By screening student athletes, we want to identify people with COVID-positive illnesses and asymptomatics before others become infected,” said Irene Cox of HCPS. “Most winter sports are done indoors and require close contact between student athletes. For example, you can’t fight unless you’re very close to your competitors.”
Henrico school leaders said players and coaches would not be able to practice or compete without testing.
Vaccinated players may choose to take the test, but it is not required.
These tests are part of the Virginia School Screening Test Guarantee program. This is a partnership between the Virginia Department of Health and the Virginia Department of Education, bringing onsite covid tests to classrooms.
The program started in Henrico in October, so no weekly tests were needed for autumn sports.
Henrico leaders said the test had some privacy. Held in various parts of the school, players wipe their noses and get results within 24 hours.
The junior high school winter sports test will begin on November 29th.
