50th Anniversary of National Cancer Law
Madison (WKOW)-Thursday celebrated the 50th anniversary of the signing of the National Cancer Act, which called on the United States to tackle the “war against cancer.”
The law called for a medical system to establish the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and a cancer center focused on cancer research and treatment. At that time, the UW Carbon Cancer Center was known as the University of Wisconsin Clinical Cancer Center. It has become the 5th NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center in Japan and has maintained its designation ever since.
“When the National Cancer Act was signed 50 years ago, we already have 50 years of disease research experience, which could help shape our research and care priorities,” said the Carbone Cancer Center. Dr. Howard Bailey, the director, said.
Bailey said he hopes that over the next few decades, researchers will have a better understanding of how and why cancer develops.
“The more we understand, the more we can prevent or treat it early, or identify people long before they develop cancer and actually screen or observe the individual very closely. You can, “said Bailey.
