The fifth Covid-19 vaccine approved for use in the state
The fifth Covid-19 vaccine has been approved for use in the state by the National Immunology Advisory Board.
Niac recommends that users over the age of 18 use Nuvaxovid, a shot developed by the US company Novavax.
Health Minister Stephen Donnelly has accepted the recommendation that the Ministry of Health has been approved by Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tony Holohan.
The European Medicines Agency approved the vaccine for use in December. Vaccines can be kept at normal refrigerator temperatures, which makes them easy to store and transport and is expected to help bridge the deep gap in vaccine supply between rich and poor countries. It is also based on traditional vaccine technology rather than the newer mRNA vaccines.
In August, the European Commission and Novavax signed a contract to administer up to 200 million doses, half of which are optional.
The minister said the vaccine was given twice with a three-week interval between doses.
Severe illness
Donnelly said in a statement on Saturday: “The vaccine has been shown to be very effective in preventing symptomatic, moderate and severe illnesses. The vaccine will be launched next month and is still in the primary course of the Covid-19 vaccine. It is advisable to do so for a few people who have not.
“This vaccine is also suitable for individuals who could not access another Covid-19 vaccine due to medical contraindications such as allergic reactions.”
Meanwhile, the number of people receiving Covid-19 treatment in Irish hospitals has fallen to its lowest level so far this year, with 649 currently infected with the virus.
There were 649 people infected with the coronavirus in the entire hospital Ireland Saturday at 11:30 am, 90 discharges in the last 24 hours.
A week ago, on January 22, 824 were being treated at Covid’s hospital, but on January 15, the previous week, 947 were hospitalized for the virus.
