Increased eating disorders in children during a pandemic
Calls to the National Eating Disorders Hotline more than doubled during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Many eating disorders begin first in childhood.
Amelia Full Tiger was only 14 years old when her eating disorder became established.
“I suddenly seemed like,’I don’t like how it looks. I’m going to change that,'” she said.
After two years of treatment, Amelia said it was still fighting her.

One of those hospitalizations was Shelten. He was taken to the emergency department of the Colorado Children’s Hospital when he lost one-third of his weight in just five months. His heart rate was so low that the doctor told his family that he was at risk of heart complications. Prior to COVID-19, he was an active high school football player.
“My coach was very supportive. I was just there for me and helped me become a better person,” he said.
After five months of intensive hospitalization, he wants to return to the scene and help other children’s hardships.
“I also want to help people with mental health in general, and I just want to encourage them to break the stigma that mental health shouldn’t be in the dark,” he said. Said.
There are several signs of eating disorders that parents should be aware of, such as excessive weight loss, weight fluctuations, abnormal eating habits, hair loss, and cavities.
The National Eating Disorders Association’s communications director told CNN that helpline calls are still increasing two years after the pandemic.
