Onondaga County was the first in New York to be infected with a new, more contagious strain of Covid-19, McMahon said.
Syracuse, NY-Highlands in Central New York Covid-19 rate Ryan McMahon, an executive in Onondaga County, said today that it could be due to the torn of yet another coronavirus submutant through the community.
The latest version of the Omicron variant is called BA2.12, and McMahon said it was even more infectious than BA.2, the predominant strain in the state and country.
“This makes a lot of sense given that Central New York is actually New York, and to some extent a country, the first community affected by it,” McMahon said in a briefing. I did. “BA.2 is 40% more contagious than the original Omicron, and BA.2.12 is even more contagious.”
According to the State Health Department, more than 90% of Covid-19 cases in central New York are due to BA.2.12 and the associated subvariant BA.2.12.1. The outbreak in Central New York is “the first reported case of significant community expansion with a new sub-mutant in the United States,” the agency said.

“This is potentially a big part of the answer,” McMahon said.
McMahon speculated that the new variant entered the community from someone who traveled and brought back the virus.
The State Health Department said it was not yet clear how contagious the new subvariants were, but called them “very contagious.”
McMahon cautioned that people are preparing to celebrate Easter and the Passover this weekend. Stay outdoors if you can, and open the windows if you can’t. Wear a mask, especially if you are with an immunocompromised person. Test in advance to reduce the chance that the virus will be brought to your supper.
Cases are increasing most rapidly in Oswego County, which borders the northern suburbs of Onondaga County. Last week, Oswego’s Covid case rate was 68 per 100,000, the highest in New York, almost three times the state average. The proportion of Onondaga County is about 52 per 100,000 inhabitants. Oswego and Onondaga together make up 75% of the population of the Central New York region, including the counties of Cayuga, Cortland and Madison.
According to McMahon, 267 new cases were confirmed by the institute today in Onondaga County, and 219 home tests were reported on Tuesday and today. He said two people had died in Covid in the last 24 hours. One is in his 60s and the other is in his 40s.
