Quebec reports the 15,000th death associated with COVID-19 since the onset of the pandemic

Since the start of the pandemic, Quebec has now recorded 15,000 deaths associated with COVID-19, according to figures released Saturday on the Quebec open data website.

The numbers show that 23 additional deaths associated with the virus have been reported in the state in the last 24 hours.

Quebec has recorded higher COVID-19-related deaths than any other state in Canada. As of Friday, a total of 39,182 deaths were associated with the disease nationwide, according to federal data.

At a press conference on Thursday, Quebec’s interim public health director admitted that the state had caused a “huge” number of deaths. However, Dr. Luc Boileau said that many of the state’s COVID-19 deaths were infected with the disease, but involved people who died from another disease.

In early January, a survey of several hospitals in the state found that it occurred over a two-week period and that 30% of COVID-19-related deaths were not due to the virus.

“COVID was there, but it wasn’t … the main cause of death,” Boileau said. “We are never happy with the fact that some people die from it, but the number is not much different from other jurisdictions.”

Dr. Francesca Rubrotta, head of the critical care department at McGill University Health Center in Montreal, said more deaths in her hospital than in many other facilities because the patient was referred after a treatment failure elsewhere. Said that it came out.

“Most of them are patients who have decided not to be vaccinated, which is very annoying,” she said in a recent interview among those currently being treated in the critical care center. “Or, unfortunately, they have been transplanted and immunosuppressed.”

She said the other patient had been ill for a long time and had severe lung damage.

Hospital treatment and follow-up care have improved over the past two years, and vaccination has led to less serious cases, she said, but some patients are still dead.

According to the Quebec open data site, 2,252 people were hospitalized for COVID-19 on Saturday, a decrease of 38 from the previous day. The number of people in the intensive care unit has decreased by 6 from the previous day to 74 now.

The data show that a PCR test reserved for a particular high-risk group detected 1,557 new cases on Friday.

The Quebec Health Department does not offer regular COVID-19 updates over the weekend.
