Recent studies show that more than 90% of new coronaviruses are inactivated when exposed to daytime sunlight in the US and most cities in the world for 11-34 minutes during the summer.

This study, published by Jose-Luis Sagripanti and C. David Lytle in the Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology in early June, showed the expected inactivation of artificial and solar UV radiation in cities around the world at various times of the year. It was calculated.

“If there is a potential for solar virus killing during a coronavirus pandemic, forcing people to stay indoors would mean that COVID-19 Infections may increase (or become more certain),” the researchers said.

“In contrast, healthy people exposed to the sun outdoors may have been more likely to be exposed to lower viral loads and mount an efficient immune response.”

The study used a model developed to estimate the solar inactivation of viruses of biological defense concern, in order to calculate the expected inactivation of the virus.

Sagripanti and Lytle said the methodology has been validated with the Ebola and Lassa viruses.
