A public inquiry was ordered by Quebec’s chief coroner after 22-year-old Amelie Champagne committed suicide after struggling to find a cure to combat a long battle with Lyme disease. , her father, Alain Champagne, CEO and president of Jean Coutu Group, made headlines across Quebec when he posted on LinkedIn about his daughter’s death last week. Amélie Champagne was diagnosed with Lyme disease in June after “years of medical wanderings in Quebec,” according to Alain Champagne.Amélie experienced symptoms at the age of 15. Staff told her family that Amelie had to be transferred to Notre Dame Hospital because the Champagne family no longer lives in the area. Champagne has publicly criticized Quebec’s health care system for abusing her daughter’s medical needs, both physically and emotionally. Quebec’s Junior Health and Social Welfare Minister Lionel Carmant said the situation was unacceptable. “That’s why we called for a coroner’s investigation to see what practices caused this, where the system failed, and what needs to be changed. We’ll change that,” Carmant said.
