Study confirms AstraZeneca jabs have high risk of very rare blood clots

Paris (AFP) – AstraZeneca’s Covid vaccine is associated with a 30% higher risk of developing a very rare blood-clotting condition compared to Pfizer’s jab, a large international study said Thursday.

The new study, published in the journal BMJ, was the first to compare thrombocytopenia rates of adenovirus and mRNA vaccines such as Pfizer across multiple countries.
An international research team analyzed health data from more than 10 million adults who received at least one vaccination between December 2020 and mid-2021 in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States. did.
In Germany and the UK, we matched data from 1.3 million people taking AstraZeneca for the first time with 2.1 million people taking Pfizer.
A total of 862 ‘thrombocytopenic events’ were recorded during the first 28 days of AstraZeneca compared to 520 for Pfizer.
That means the AstraZeneca vaccine has a 30% higher risk of thrombocytopenia than Pfizer.
However, there were no additional risks with any of the vaccines for the second dose.
This study was an observational study and could not demonstrate causality. However, the researchers said additional analyzes found the results to be consistent.
Although extremely rare, these risks “should be considered when planning further vaccination campaigns and future vaccine development,” the study said.

Sarah Pitt, a microbiologist at the University of Brighton, UK, who was not involved in the study, said a “well-designed” study “adds to the data showing that all vaccines are safe and effective. ” he said.
“Very rare” cases of thrombocytopenia have occurred in Germany and the UK after only 0.04% vaccination, she told AFP.
Most countries had already avoided using adenoviral Covid vaccines in high-risk older and younger populations, she added.
