MDHHS announces first flu-related child death reported in Michigan this season
LANSING, Mich. (WXYZ) – Michigan has confirmed its first influenza-related childhood death this season, the state health department announced Friday.
The child contracted influenza A and H1N1, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. At least 93 childhood influenza-related deaths have been reported across the United States this season.
“These are tragedies that no family should ever have to endure,” Michigan Medical Director Dr. Natasha Baghdasarian said in a statement. “Each year, influenza claims the lives of dozens of children across the United States. That's why MDHHS continues to strongly recommend the seasonal influenza vaccine for everyone six months of age and older. This is the best way to protect yourself and your family from getting sick, and to reduce the severity of illness if someone gets the flu.”
According to MDHHS, flu cases are currently on the rise in Michigan.
“In recent years, we've seen a late surge in influenza cases, which is unusual,” said Dr. Hassan Akel, an emergency room physician based in metro Detroit.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that nationwide since October, there have been at least the following:
- 28 million to 51 million people will get the flu
- The number of medical treatments for influenza is 13 million to 24 million.
- Number of hospitalizations due to influenza: 310,000 to 640,000
- 20,000 to 57,000 deaths
According to MDHHS, 25.1% of Michigan residents have received a flu shot this season.
