Counterfeit or mishandled Botox injections linked to adverse reactions in nine states

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 19 people in nine states have experienced adverse reactions after receiving cosmetic injections (commonly known as Botox) administered by unlicensed or untrained individuals or from non-medical settings. Nine people were hospitalized and four were treated with botulism antitoxin because the botulinum toxin may have spread beyond the injection site, the agency said.
Reactions to the product occurred in Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee, and Washington.
All 19 people are women and range in age from 25 to 59, according to the CDC. All but one reported receiving injections for cosmetic purposes.
The agency is investigating the report along with several state and local health departments and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The CDC advises asking health care providers and facilities, such as clinics and spas, whether they are licensed and trained to administer the shots. They also advise asking whether the product is FDA-approved and comes from a reputable source. If in doubt, authorities advise not to get the shot.
Botulism is a rare but serious disease caused by toxins released by bacteria that attack the nervous system. Symptoms include blurred or double vision, droopy eyelids, difficulty breathing, fatigue, and slurred speech or hoarseness. If left untreated, muscle paralysis progresses over hours to days and can be fatal.
According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, Clostridium botulinum is an ingredient in Botox and similar cosmetic products. Purified forms of botulinum toxin have been approved by the FDA for use as a cosmetic treatment by licensed health care providers, the report said. news release It was published last week.
