Shasta County and Alzheimer's Association Partner for Healthy Aging Workshop
Shasta County, California — Officials with the Alzheimer's Association and Shasta County Health and Human Services want to make sure the Shasta County community is informed about healthy aging.
Today, officials from the Alzheimer's Association and HHSA hosted Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body The workshop took place at the Shasta Family YMCA on Court Street in Redding, where they offered research-based advice for living a healthy aging in place.
The event coincided with Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month.
Danielle Belong, community education specialist with the Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency, said there are ways to reduce the risk of dementia through factors such as sleep, physical activity and nutrition.
“Mental health is definitely another modifiable risk factor for dementia, so if you're experiencing mental health issues, make sure you get the help you need or speak to your healthcare provider and get support, which can also help reduce your risk of dementia,” Belong said.
Belong said some habits that are good for brain health include quitting smoking, lowering blood pressure if you have high blood pressure, exercising for 30 minutes five days a week, getting eight hours of sleep each night and following a healthy diet, such as the Mediterranean diet.
Such activities could help reduce the risk of dementia by up to 40 percent in some cases, he said.
The free courses on brain and body health will continue throughout the summer and fall.
