How gut tests can help detect Parkinson's disease early
Recent results from a Cure Parkinson's disease-funded study provide further evidence for the possible role of the gut in Parkinson's disease, as well as identifying new markers that may aid in the early detection of Parkinson's disease.

In this study, researchers looked at mice exposed to samples of the gut microbiota of Parkinson's disease patients. The researchers found that these mice had higher levels of intestinal inflammation. They also detected the presence of clumps of alpha-synuclein, a protein that is a hallmark and driving force in the progression of Parkinson's disease, in the gut. Additionally, the research team also saw evidence of inflammation (neuroinflammation) in the brain, indicating that this may be caused by the gut. Neuroinflammation is also thought to be an important factor in Parkinson's disease.
Overall, these findings support the hypothesis that Parkinson's disease may originate in the gut, also known as “gut-first” Parkinson's disease. Further implications of this study may also lie in how this knowledge can be used to improve early detection and diagnosis of Parkinson's disease. Researchers say that biomarkers of inflammation and alpha-synuclein in the gut, measurable indicators of what's going on in the body, may help clinicians identify early signs of Parkinson's disease. It is proposed that there is. This may also provide an opportunity for early intervention, raising the question of whether treating problems such as enterocolitis can prevent the development of Parkinson's disease.
