Keeping health care workers healthy amid Minnesota's “quadruple infectious disease”

At Children's Minnesota, the so-called “quademic” will mean doctors and nurses will again be wearing masks when seeing patients, including pediatrician Dr. Chase Stuck.
“It's the same rule as on a plane: You can't put on someone else's oxygen mask without first putting on your own,” Stuck said. “So if I'm sick, or one of my colleagues is sick, I should stay home to keep others from getting sick.”
Shutak says it's natural for parents to be concerned about their child's health, but the ER should be a last resort.
“Even if your child is vomiting frequently, they may not actually be dehydrated. So you end up in the emergency room in a sense because you're like, 'Oh my God, my child won't stop vomiting.' You may feel the need, but you don't necessarily do anything there that you wouldn't do in the clinic,” said Stuck.
Deciding when to go to the ER is a difficult decision, but the essence of emergency care is “emergency.” One question parents should consider is: Is this problem worth waiting so long for?
“The things that actually require you to go to the emergency room are often either trauma, some kind of accident with an injury, or serious breathing problems. So you're starting to turn blue, you're “I'm trying even harder to breathe,'' Stak said. “If you don't plan on going to the emergency room for at least four to six hours, it may not actually be an emergency.”

- Have a primary care provider for every family member, stay up-to-date on preventive care, and have your primary care team available to work with you on all medical issues.
