UR medical research aims to reduce opioid prescriptions after dental surgery
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHAM) — A new groundbreaking study involving the University of Rochester could change the way dentists treat pain after wisdom tooth extraction.
Patient Calvin Sam is two weeks away from surgery.
“I'm doing very well. I'm eating normally,” he explained.
Sam is also seeing more patients avoid opioids after wisdom tooth extraction.
“This is really a concept and how[we]can impact acute pain prescribing in the United States and hopefully impact the opioid crisis,” said Dr. Hans Malmström, director of the Eastman Institute of Oral Health (EIOH). This is to see if it is possible.” General dentistry.
The trial involved 1,800 patients and found that a combination of over-the-counter acetaminophen and ibuprofen was more effective than opioids in relieving pain after dental surgery.
“Basically, we found that using non-opioids results in less pain and better pain management,” Malmstrom explained. “This means that the first few days after wisdom tooth removal are the most painful, but there are fewer side effects.”
Sam used only over-the-counter painkillers after the surgery.
“I was very surprised at how well the Tylenol and ibuprofen worked after the discomfort I felt after the surgery,” Sam said.
UR Medicine's EIOH was also one of the research facilities.
Malmstrom said he hopes the results will lead to changes in prescribing practices.
“In the past year or so, 5 million prescriptions have been given to young people who have had their wisdom teeth removed,” Malmstrom said. “That's a significant number. We're putting them at risk for addiction.”
Researchers believe this could make a big difference.
Currently, 5 million young people are exposed to opioids each year after wisdom tooth extraction, which can be misused.
