UK Covid cases show the largest increase ever, with 36,804 infections and 691 deaths, as positive tests double in a week.
UK coronavirus cases have seen the largest daily increase ever since 36,804 new positive tests and 691 deaths were announced today.
The latest daily figures show that Covid cases have almost doubled since the 18,450 infections recorded this time last week.

The 691 deaths are the second highest since May, only five of the 696 deaths posted on November 25, shortly after the announcement of the second national blockade.
That’s a 37 percent increase from 506 deaths last Tuesday.
Positive tests have also nearly tripled from two weeks before 12,282 cases were recorded on December 8.
The number of cases recorded on Tuesday can often be higher due to the delay in positive tests reported over the weekend.
The total number of Covid patients in the hospital has increased to 18,080. This is the highest level since April 22nd.
Hospitalizations peaked during the first wave at 21,683 on April 12.
Since the start of the pandemic in January this year, more than 2,000,000 positive tests and 68,000 deaths have been recorded.
The increase in cases is believed to be due to new mutant strains of the virus that swept London and the southeast.
Eight regions of England, including Saloc and Basildon in Essex and Havering in East London, currently have an infection rate of over 1,000 per 100,000 inhabitants.
Due to the surge in infection levels, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a new Tier 4 blockade on Saturday. This returned 16 million people to a virtual blockade, closed all pubs and non-essential stores, and encouraged people to stay indoors.
There are concerns that new mutants will be present in all parts of the UK, and health bosses and government ministers are urging people in Tier 4 regions not to travel to other parts of the country.
