Distracted nurse gives patient 6 COVID vaccine doses

A 23-year-old patient was vaccinated on Sunday morning and was observed 24 hours a day at Noah Hospital in Tuscany. She was given fluids, anti-inflammatory and fever medications and was released on Monday. She did not experience any side effects.

“At this point, this person certainly has no side effects,” Dr. Antonella Vicenti, MD, responsible for the infection at Noah Hospital, told the press.

Each vial of Pfizer vaccine contains 6 doses. Each dose is extracted individually and placed in separate dilution vials. On Sunday, the vaccinated nurse injected the entire amount from an undiluted vial.

The nurse noticed the error and immediately spoke to the patient and her doctor. The attending physician has begun monitoring women’s side effects, CBS News reported. They also warned local health authorities and the patient’s family.

A Pfizer study found that people who received up to five times the usual dose had no additional response. In addition, Israeli and German patients who were mistakenly given six doses showed no side effects, CBS News reported.

“The patient had no fever and had no pain except for pain at the site of inoculation and other symptoms,” she said. “She was a little scared, so we preferred to keep her here until this morning.”

The hospital regularly checks the patient’s blood to monitor her immune response and long-term effects, CBS News reported. The hospital has also launched an investigation to consider safety procedures.

“This should never happen,” Tommaso Bellandi, head of patient security for the health authorities in northwestern Tuscany, told the press.

“Unfortunately, because of our limits as humans and the limits of our organization, these things can happen,” he said.
