The biggest question in Russian politics is not who will win this weekend's election, but there is little doubt about it.

According to former British Ambassador to Russia Sir Laurie Bristow, this is a transition to President Vladimir Putin's successor.

“I don’t think that President Putin’s position will be threatened in the near or even the medium term. But there is no getting away from the fact that for some time the biggest problem in Russian politics has been the question of succession.

“He is 71 years old and an old KGB agent… One of the problems in Russia is that no one knows how, when and in whose favor the transition to Putin's successor will occur.

“I don't think anything will fundamentally change in Russia until that happens, and likely won't for some time after that. But that's the problem everyone knows.”

Sir Lowry told Sky News that the war in Ukraine had not gone as Russia wanted.

They've lost a number of ships and some important electronic warfare surveillance aircraft in the Black Sea over the past few weeks, and Ukraine is taking the fight to Russia by attacking things like oil refineries.

He added that the most important thing now is for the U.S. Congress to announce a $61 billion military aid package for Ukraine.

“Otherwise Ukraine will run out of ammunition. That won't change the war with them decisively. But it will mean far more Ukrainians resisting Russian aggression will be killed than would otherwise be the case.”

Sir Laurie said Putin was “betting that the West and the United States will lose patience and will” and that “that's what we need to be most wary of.”

“What everyone needs to understand here is that the negotiated agreement with President Putin is not an agreement,” he added. “A ceasefire with President Putin does not lead to putting out the fire,” he added. Don’t let him win militarily.”

Sir Lowry was British Ambassador to Russia from 2016 to 2020.
