The United States will withdraw its troops from Niger, according to a source

The United States will withdraw its troops from Niger, a source familiar with the matter said Friday evening, adding that an agreement had been reached between US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell and Nigerien leaders.

Last year, there were just over 1,000 U.S. troops in Niger, where the U.S. military operated from two bases, including a drone base known as Air Base 201 near Agadez in the center of Niger, at a cost of more than 100 million dollars.

Since 2018, the base has been used to target militants from the Islamic State and Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen, an al-Qaeda affiliate, in the Sahel region.

Last year, Niger's military seized power in a coup. Until the coup, Niger had remained a key security partner of the United States and France.

But Niger's new authorities have joined juntas in neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso to end military deals with former Western allies like Washington and Paris, leave the regional political and economic bloc ECOWAS and foster closer ties with Russia.

In the coming days, discussions will take place on how this troop withdrawal will take place, the source told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The source said diplomatic and economic relations between the United States and Niger would persist despite this measure.

Earlier Friday, the New York Times reported that more than 1,000 U.S. troops would leave Niger in the coming months.

Last month, Niger's ruling junta said it had revoked with immediate effect a military agreement allowing U.S. Defense Department military and civilian personnel to enter its territory.

The Pentagon later said it was seeking clarification on how to proceed. He adds that the US government had “direct and frank” conversations in Niger before the junta's announcement and continues to communicate with Niger's ruling military council.

Hundreds of people took to the streets of Niger's capital last week to demand the departure of American troops after the ruling junta further changed its strategy by ending the military agreement with the United States and welcoming Russian military instructors.

Eight coups in West and Central Africa in four years, including in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, have sparked growing concerns about democratic backsliding in the region.
