American Academy of Neurology publishes guidelines for treating motor symptoms

The guidance updates the recommendations for dopamine agonists published in 2002 for the initiation treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) has published guidelines for treating motor symptoms known as motor symptoms for individuals with early Parkinson’s disease.

“We carefully reviewed the available studies on the potential risks of drug therapy to treat motor symptoms in people with early Parkinson’s disease, and levodopa is usually the best first treatment for these symptoms. “I discovered that,” said a fellow AAN member of the University’s Tamara Princeheim Medical Doctor Calgary in a statement.

The new guidelines encourage healthcare providers to advise individuals with early-stage Parkinson’s disease on the benefits and risks of the three initial treatment options. A dopamine agonist that mimics the effects of dopamine. Levodopa, a drug that is converted to dopamine in the brain. Monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) inhibitors prevent the MAO-B enzyme from degrading dopamine.

The guidelines also state that treatment with levodopa offers superior benefits in reducing motor symptoms over other options.

Levodopa is more likely to cause dyskinesias during the first 5 years of treatment than initial treatment with dopamine agonists, but the prevalence was lower during this period.

The guidelines recommend that healthcare providers prescribe the lowest effective dose to minimize the risk of dyskinesia and optimize profits.

Dopamine agonists are more likely to cause hallucinations as well as impulsive dysregulation such as gambling addiction, diet, sexual activity, and shopping. It can also increase the risk of causing excessive daytime sleepiness.

Also, taking dopamine agonists and MAO-B inhibitors rather than levodopa is more likely to discontinue treatment due to side effects.

People taking MAO-B inhibitors are also more likely to need additional treatment within a few years.
