“Fighting the bite” against Lyme disease
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – As the weather warms, the Illinois Department of Public Health is reminding the public to protect themselves from ticks and Lyme disease, an infectious disease that affects about 500,000 people a year.
If you plan to go into forests or areas with tall shrubbery, it is important to wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, and closed-toed shoes or boots. Depending on the amount of natural brush around you, you may need to duct tape the bottom of your pants to your shoes or wear a head/face covering.
Ticks have barbs in their mouths, and experts say not to use fire to burn the insects if they are embedded in your skin. Instead, use tweezers to firmly grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull the tick straight out.
“Lyme disease is caused by a bacterium that is specifically transmitted by deer ticks, but all ticks in this region are known to carry certain diseases,” said Andrea Wallace Noble, Severson Dells education program manager. says Mr. “So no matter what kind of tick you have on your body, if you find one, it's important to save it and get it tested in the future.”
