March for Imran Khan's release approaches Islamabad, Pakistan

Imran may be incarcerated but his influence does not appear to have diminished. “We would not let them storm the capital,” provincial Information Minister Uzma Bukhari said, adding that around 80 Khan supporters had been arrested.

Several police officers were injured during clashes and riots in parts of the province, she told a news conference.

The capital has added an extra level of security ahead of the visit of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who is expected to arrive on Monday.

Khan's party accused the government of using violent tactics to block protesters, saying it had arrested hundreds of workers and leaders.

“They even fire live ammunition,” one of Khan’s aides, Shaukat Yousafzai, told Geo News TV.

Gatherings of all kinds in Islamabad have been banned, police said in a statement. Authorities closed all schools in Islamabad and the adjacent garrison town of Rawalpindi, while internet messaging services and WhatsApp also slowed.

The protest march, which Khan called a “last call”, is one of several demonstrations organized by his party to secure his release since his imprisonment in August last year. The party's last demonstration in Islamabad, in early October, turned violent.

Khan's third wife, Bushra Bibi, and a key aide, Ali Amin Gandapur, who is the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, are leading a rally that arrived Sunday evening just outside Islamabad, said his party.

Ousted from power by Parliament in 2022 after falling out with Pakistan's powerful military, Khan faces accusations ranging from corruption to inciting violence, which he and his party deny.

The military plays an outsized political role and primarily decides who will rule this South Asian nation of 241 million people. With Imran not getting along with the current military top brass, this leaves him with virtually no chance of crossing the swamp and retaking the prime minister's post.
